Cute, supportive, comfy—the whole package.
By Talia Abbas and Jake Smith
If you thought finding a regular bra was tough, searching for the best sports bras can be even more challenging. But it’s worth putting in the extra effort—just like how squat-proof leggings can improve any workout, the right sports bra can mean the difference between an uncomfortable workout and a personal best. (And if you're lucky, it’s also just as cute as it is supportive.)
The best place to start is by figuring out when you’ll wear your pick. Low-impact sports bras are great for leisurely activities like yoga, biking, and walking—and they can sub in for everyday bras under a T-shirt when everything else is in the wash. Medium-impact styles tend to be the workhorse option of choice for dancing, running, and Pilates. Then, of course, there are the high-impact sports bras that get you through your most intense workouts with extra support and compression.
Despite the complexities of sports bras’ designs, the sheer number of brands selling ones that appear to check all the boxes is dizzying. But we know better than to be swayed by just any bra, so we reached out to athletes—women who’ve spent hundreds of hours running, dancing, practicing yoga, hiking, basically anything and everything—to find out which sports bras actually deliver.
From full-coverage racerback designs ideal for larger breasts to moisture-wicking bras perfect for high-intensity workouts, check out the best sports bras real athletes recommend below.

Nike Dri-FIT Indy Sports Bra
My favorite go-to bra is the Nike Indy Bra. I love this one because it’s great for nearly everything, [but especially] for more low-impact activities like yoga and some forms of dance. It gives the support that you need but also the freedom to move. And more often than not, it ends up being just a great versatile bra even when I’m not working out because it's so comfortable. —Traci Copeland, Nike master trainer

Athleta Ultimate Bra
There’s nothing worse than feeling suctioned into your sports bra, and Athleta's Ultimate Bra is almost comfortable enough where you don’t want to take it off. The minimal fabric with the racerback feels lightweight while still offering a ton of support. —Selena Maisonpierre, Sky Ting yoga teacher

Lululemon In Alignment Straight-Strap Bra
Lululemon launched sports bras a few years ago and this one is a favorite for low-impact activities like yoga. It’s specifically made for A/B cups (the brand also has styles for larger cup sizes) and has a hook-and-eye closure, just like a traditional bra clasp. Putting it on is a breeze after years of squeezing my way into too-tight racerbacks, and since it snaps open easily, I don't have to worry about overstretching the band. It has also molded cups for shape and coverage, and the adjustable straps allow for a personalized fit—perfect for my smaller shoulder frame! —Talia Abbas, senior commerce editor and longtime runner

Alo Delight Bralette
This is my all-time favorite bra! It’s my go-to and I have it in every color. I love that no matter what your bra size is, it looks and fits great. I’m normally a 32D and this has been the best fit yet. I love the adjustable straps and the ribbed underband. I also love the open neckline and how minimal and sleek it looks. The fabric is a breathable cotton that feels great during a sweaty yoga practice! —Amina Taha, yoga instructor

Athleta Conscious Crop
The Athleta ConsciousCrop may be a bra, but it's also a crop top that can be worn on its own and will look great when you aren’t working out. I love the simplicity of one well-functioning item doing two jobs. —Jessica Rihal, yoga and meditation instructor

Outdoor Voices Move Free Crop Top
Whether I’m teaching a dance or yoga class, things can get sweaty, and this is my favorite bra for any session that requires tons of movement. It comes up higher on the neck for nice coverage and support, and the crop top length is perfect for wearing it alone as a top. A big plus too is that the fabric is thin but compressive, so you can wear it in stuffy studios or on extra-warm days. —Ezra Shipin, yoga and dance instructor

Knix Catalyst Sports Bra
The Catalyst is truly revolutionary when it comes to bras. It comes in a great range of sizes, fitting chests from 32A to 42F, which I absolutely love because all women of different shapes and sizes should be able to find a bra they can move in. The fabric is also supersoft, breathable, and ideal for women with larger chests since it offers support without digging or pinching your shoulders. It also has a hook closure in the back (so no postworkout fight with yanking off a sweaty bra) and adjustable straps that really help you customize the fit. I love to lift weights in it or even do more high-impact activities like running or HIIT training. —Jaimmy Koroma, fitness and lifestyle advocate

Lululemon Energy Bra
The medium support Energy bra from Lululemon is the perfect sports bra—seriously. It’s supportive enough to wear on a run, and yet so comfortable that I’m not dying to take it off ASAP. Theshoulder straps don’t dig into my shoulders, which is my biggest complaint with sports bras. —S.M.

Under Armour Mid Crossback Sports Bra
For me, as a female runner, the sports bra is one of the most essential pieces of gear to get right. The wrong sports bra could leave you in a world of hurt when things start bouncing. I’ve done a lot of running in the Louisiana heat and humidity, and all of the moisture is like a breeding ground for chafing. When I’m looking for a good sports bra, I’m looking for one that will provide a lot of support and coverage. I [also] like to get one that has a thick band around the chest. My go-to for this is the Under Armour Crossback. I find that bras with a thicker band at the bottom tend to do a little less bouncing while you’re running. When the bra bounces, it can cause ridiculous chafe marks across your upper abdomen and sternum area. —Ebony Blackwell, runner

On Active Bra
You probably know (and love) On for its sneakers, but the brand has been getting more and more into apparel lately—and this bra delivers. It's compressive without constricting my shoulders or upper rib cage, and though the product description says it's best for yoga and weight lifting, I've been using it for running and loving it. Don't let the crisscross strappy design in the back intimidate you—this bra is a dream to put on and take off, even when you're dripping and sticky in sweat. —T.A.

MWL Flex Cutout-Back Tank
MWL’s workout collection never fails to impress—I’ve been wearing this pullover tank situation all summer long for outdoor runs. It’s not the most compressive sports bra I own, but it is one of the most comfortable sports bras. There's enough support to get me through a seven-mile run, and since it's so easy to take off when I’m drenched in sweat, I don't mind dealing with a little bounce on my run. I was worried the white would be really see-through at first, but there are removable cups, and unless I douse myself with water from a fountain (been there), I don’t have to worry about exposing myself. The longline cut is nice too if you feel self-conscious about running in just a sports bra, which I do sometimes when I’m not in NYC. —T.A.

Day/Won x Megababe Star Double Scoop Bra
There are three qualities in a sports bra that, as a plus-size hiker, I look for: fit, comfort, and lightweight material. This is my top recommended sports bra because of how comfortable it is and because of its sweat-wicking, antimicrobial material. It provides great support without feeling too tight, making it perfect for long hikes on hot summer days. And the fact that Day/Won is female-empowered and fully size-inclusive makes it even better! —Celeste Mick, hiker
